Flood and landslide kill at least 18 people in Kenya

flood in kenya

The East African country of Kenya has suffered a major flood and landslide disaster, leading to the death of no fewer than 18 people, while thousands have been displaced. Heavy downpours have caused flooding and landslides in the Nairobi area, submerging roads and houses. However, the government has deployed rescue operations to prevent further casualties. This is the second flood disaster facing the country within two months. In March 2026, flooding killed at least 40 people in Kenya.

Meanwhile, heavy rain is still expected in the Nairobi area in the next five days, signaling a more intense flood challenge in the coming days. Other areas severely affected by the flood include the Kiambu and Syokimau areas. In Syokimau, more than two thousand homes have been submerged by flood according to reports.

Flooding in the Syokimau area is blamed on unplanned development, resulting in building on waterways, thereby blocking water channels from free flow after a downpour. With a sustained downpour, flood overflows into people’s homes.

So far, it is estimated that more than 50 thousand people have been affected by the flood and landslide across Kenya.
