The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Mr. Xu Quing, a Chinese national, who is wanted in China for an illegal ponzi scheme that defrauded the public of about $245 million. In 2024, the suspect left China and headed to Nigeria, where he lived until his arrest and repatriation about two weeks ago.
A statement signed by the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, noted that Mr. Xu was trailed by the Police Force through Interpol. “The Nigeria Police Force through INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Abuja, has successfully arrested and repatriated a Chinese fugitive, Xu Qing, to the People’s Republic of China to face charges related to large-scale illegal absorption of public deposits through a ponzi scheme,” a part of the statement reads.
According to the Nigeria Police, “investigation revealed that the suspect fled China to Nigeria on 5th November 2024 in an attempt to evade arrest, following which a warrant was issued against him on 12th November 2025 by the Shinan Sub-Bureau of Qingdao Public Security”. Relying on intelligence and surveillance, the Interpol NCB Abuja, successfully traced and arrested Mr. Xu “at a factory located in Olowotedo, Siun Village, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State on 24th April, 2026,” the police said. The Chinese national was thereafter repatriated to China four days later to face the law in his country.
Consequently, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, counseled employers to do their due diligence on foreign nationals before employing them. The Nigeria Police also affirms its commitment to fighting crimes and ensuring that Nigeria does not become a safe place for fugitive criminals.
